The Essential Legal Disclosures for a Content Project

The Essential Legal Disclosures for a Content Project

Start with a Privacy Policy

Collecting email addresses creates responsibilities for handling personal information. A privacy policy should explain what information is collected, why it is needed, how it is stored, and whether it is shared with service providers or other parties. It should also describe how subscribers can unsubscribe or ask for their information to be corrected or deleted. The details depend on the tools used and the laws that apply, so a generic template may not cover every situation.

Be clear at the point of signup, too. Tell people what they are agreeing to receive, and avoid collecting information that is not necessary. Keep the policy accurate as your practices change.

Set Clear Terms of Use

Terms of use explain the conditions for accessing and using your content. They can address ownership of written stories, images, and other creative work; restrictions on copying or republishing; and limits on responsibility for how readers use the material. If people can submit comments or other contributions, the terms may also explain what is permitted and how submissions are handled.

Use plain language wherever possible. Readers should be able to understand the rules without having to interpret dense legal jargon. Terms should reflect actual practices rather than promise protections or services you do not provide.

Make Contact Information Available

A reliable contact email gives readers a way to ask questions, report concerns, or make privacy requests. Check it regularly and make sure someone is responsible for responding. If you publish under a business or project name, identify that name clearly so people know whom they are contacting.

Disclose Affiliate Relationships

If you earn a commission from recommended products or links, disclose that relationship clearly and close to the relevant recommendation. For Amazon Associates links, use the disclosure wording required by the program and follow its current policies. A disclosure helps readers understand that a purchase may support your work, while allowing them to make an informed choice.

These pages and disclosures are a practical starting point, not a substitute for legal advice. Requirements vary by location and activity, so seek qualified guidance when your circumstances call for it.
